Dissolvable punctal plug occlusion is a technique that involves inserting a dissolvable plastic plug into the lacrimal canaliculus to reduce the tears drainage, causing the tears to retain in the eye for a longer period of time and keeping the eye moist.
Dissolvable punctal plugs have different occlusion durations that range from 2 weeks to 6 months, provide another option for patients who are not able to relieve the dry eyes symptomatic by artificial tears eye drops, lubricating eye gels or ointments.
The tear film has properties to moisten the eye and protect the eye from infections. Symptoms of red eyes, dryness, sharp pain, blurred vision, etc. may occur if tears are not sufficient to lubricate and nourish the eye. A comprehensive eye examination is recommended if dry eyes problem is suspected.
