Orthokeratology

Studies from the Myopia Research Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University suggested that Orthokeratology lens (OK lens) can slow down the progression of myopia by nearly 50% when compared to children who wear spectacles.

Orthokeratology is a non-surgical procedure that can temporarily correct refractive errors (mainly for myopia and astigmatism). It also helps to slow down the progression of myopia by utilizing rigid gas permeable contact lenses to reshape the cornea, so that objects can be focused on the retina without wearing glasses.

OK lenses are worn during sleep. Most people can obtain clear vision throughout the day without wearing glasses after the lenses are removed from the eyes in the morning. It is also convenient for people who participate in sport activities. However, this reshaping effect of the cornea is temporary, the cornea will gradually return to its original shape if patients stop wearing lenses for a period of time.

Patients should pay special attention to the proper handling of OK lens, and follow optometrist’s hygiene care procedures to avoid infection. Children should use their lenses under parents’ supervision and assistance. They are advised to develop good habits and have their lenses and cases cleaned and sterilized daily, and the protein removal procedures carried out every one to two weeks.

Children should first undergo the comprehensive eye examination and fitting assessments for the suitability of Orthokeratology.

Optometrists will conduct eye check-ups regularly and prescribe replacement lenses for patients during the procedure in order to ensure accurate prescription and good corneal health.
